Chemistry B * (sponsored by the GNSSP grant)
Course title: Chemistry B (The Energetics of Chemical Change)
Status: REGISTRATION OPEN
For Boston Teachers: Click Here To Register
For Non-Boston Teachers: Click Here To Register
Course Audience: middle school science teachers and high school chemistry (the course content would not be applicable for the elementary school level)
Course Description: This course focuses on the nature of chemical reactions and the forces that drive them. These forces are explored by examining the flow of energy in reaction systems. Through this exploration teachers learn why chemical reactions happen, under what conditions they happen, and how chemical equilibrium is achieved when energy flows stop. The time scales involved in achieving chemical equilibrium and how reaction rates are affected by changing temperature and the use of substances called catalysts are also addressed. Special emphasis will be placed on the role of chemical kinetics and equilibrium in the chemistry of life processes. Participants will engage in classroom and laboratory activities drawn from inquiry-based instructional materials.
Course Number: CHM 6502
Session: Summer II Session 2010
Dates: July 19-23, July 26-30, 2010

Stipend Information:
Teachers from partner school districts are eligible to earn stipends of $600 which will directly cover the cost of tuition (not university fees). Stipends will be issued to teachers once all required work has been submitted and a passing letter grade has been issued. NOTE: All students MUST take the course for graduate credit (teachers will receive up to 60 PDP’s as well, pro-rated based upon attendance).
Attendance Policy:
In order to receive graduate credit for this course, participants may not miss in excess of 8 instructional hours over the duration of the course.  Any hours missed up until this point must be cleared with the instructional team, and alternative arrangements must be made to make up the work if necessary.
